Hero Kids Crafty Hour: Shaving Cream Technique

It's time for another fun idea to do with your kiddos! Today is a "preteen edition" with Libby and her daughter, but the technique they are doing is great for kids of all ages!

I'm sure a lot of you remember the "shaving cream technique" - it is not new, it's been around for ages. But every time I do it, with kids and adults alike, it's a huge hit! For this fun technique, you will need: classic white, foamy shaving cream (the cheap stuff is great!), a popsicle stick, a stirring stick or toothpick, paper, and an ink to use. We are using Liquid Watercolors for this today, they work perfectly! But it also will work with reinkers, and possibly even food coloring (although the color may be muted).

Begin by filling your surface (here, we used a paper plate to contain it) with shaving cream. You only need a thin layer.

Next, add dots of color.

Using the stirring stick or toothpick, swirl around the colors. Swirl "enough" without doing too much, or you could over-mix the colors or create mud.

Place a piece of cardstock right on top of the shaving cream. Let it set for a minute, then carefully lift it back up.

Using the popsicle stick, "shave" the shaving cream off of the paper.

Look at the amazing marbled look you get!!

We turned the background into a card using the Hello Message Fancy Die. My daughter made a stack of these, and will be sending them to her friends she's missing from school.

But a word of warning, that plate full of shaving cream is very tempting, and it can get messy!
