Using Dies as Stencils

Hey there! Daniel, here, with a spooky little invitation created almost exclusively with stencils that I created from dies! I used a few stamps -- one for the face and one for the sentiment.

This little card took its inspiration from one of the spookiest movie scenes ever -- Salem's Lot, where Danny floats up to Mark's window and tries to get him to open it. The whole scene, I was hunkered down on the couch barely unable to avert my eyes. When I watch it now, it's not nearly as spooky, but it haunted me as a boy!

To begin this little project, I die cut cardstock scraps with the dies of the Hero Lifestyle Trick or Treat set, to create small stencils of the head, shirt and pants.

Then, I die cut another stencil using the Elegant Window Fancy Die, keeping all the pieces.

Next, I stenciled in the vampire over a Dove White Side-folded Card, covering him with the window stencil so that the body comes in behind the window. For the pants and hair, I used Intens-ified Black Ink. For the shirt, I used Root Beer Reactive Ink.

Then, I masked the vampire body with the die cut pieces and stenciled in clouds from the April 2020 Kit (sold out) using Fog Reactive Ink. You can get the same look by stamping in clouds from the Color Layering Moonlit Night stamp set.

After that, I inlaid the squares from the window using repositionable adhesive dots, and pulled up the window leaving the panes behind as masks. Then, I added Intens-ified Black Ink and Fog Reactive Ink over the panes and the entire front of the card with a Hero Arts Blending Brush.

When I removed the window pane masks, I added a few details with matching Copic markers to the vampire's face, hair and clothes. Then, I stamped a face from the Hero Lifestyle Faces, adding a nose and eyebrows with a black fineliner.

Next, I added some gold gel pen accents to the bottom and right edges of each window pane frame.

To finish off the card, I created a sentiment strip using the Message Strips Stamp & Cut XL, with Pitch Black Cardstock, Gold Embossing Powder, Clear Embossing and Watermark Ink. I popped it up on the front with some foam tape.

This invitation is perfect for the vampires in your life that need one! I hope it scares the dickens out of you! Or at least you get a chuckle out of it.

If you are inspired to try using your dies as stencils, don't forget to enter your creations into our current Stenciling Challenge running now through October 7! You can use readymade stencils or create your own stencils with dies. Get creative and have fun!

Thank you for joining me on the blog today. I hope you have a wonderfully creepy fall!
