Hi there, this is Annie Williams and I’m excited to be back on the blog today to share a couple of easy and fun ways to use patterned paper in your cardmaking projects. Patterned papers can be a little intimidating to some due to busy patterns or bright colors, but I hope these techniques can help to show how easily they can add texture and color to an otherwise plain card.
Trim a piece of blue buffalo check patterned paper from the Doodlebug Buffalo Check-Wood Grain Rainbow Petite Prints Pack down to 4.25” x 5.5” and adhere to a top-folding A2-sized white card base. Using the back side of the same paper, trim a piece of blue wood grain paper to the same size, slice it diagonally across the center with a trimmer, and adhere to the bottom of the card front with foam adhesive.
Die-cut white, Mirror Gold, and Rainforest Cardstock using the small flowers from the Vintage Florals Die Set. Add shading to the flowers and leaves with Squeezed Lemonade and Mowed Lawn Distress Ink and assemble with liquid glue. Adhere along the diagonal seam with a mix of liquid glue and foam adhesive for lots of dimensions. To finish off the card, add a sentiment foiled in Matte Gold Hot Foil using the Must-Have Sentiments Glimmer Plate.
Ink up the Peony Background Press Plate with BetterPress Black Ink and press it onto a piece of light pink wood grain patterned paper. Trim the panel down to 4.125” x 5.375”, mat it with Onyx Cardstock, and adhere it to a top-folding A2-sized white card base. Die cut Onyx Cardstock using one of the Mirrored Arch Dies and pop it up in the center of the card with foam adhesive.
Die-cut white and Rainforest Cardstock using the small flower dies from the Vintage Florals Die Set. Add shading to the die-cuts with Kitsch Flamingo and Mowed Lawn Distress Ink, assemble with liquid glue, and pop up on the side of the mirrored arch die-cut. Add a sentiment pressed onto Porcelain Cotton Cardstock using the You Are Everything Sentiments Press Plate Set and some Crystal Mix Gems to embellish.
Add a piece of White Liner Sheet double-sided adhesive to scrap cardstock. Trim different colors of wood grain patterned paper from the Doodlebug Buffalo Check-Wood Grain Rainbow Petite Prints Pack into 0.25” strips and place them on the exposed adhesive on the scrap paper, leaving a bit of room between each one. Add Solaria Gold Glitter on top, spreading it with your finger and pressing it in the spaces between the strips to adhere. Die-cut your new patterned paper using one of the Essential Hearts Dies.
Trim a piece of black buffalo check patterned paper to 4.25” square, mat with Onyx Cardstock, and wrap with Flashy Gold Metallic Cord before adhering it to a top-folding 4.75” square white card base with foam adhesive. Pop the heart die-cut up on top using more foam adhesive. To finish off the card, add a sentiment foiled in Opaque Black Hot Foil using the Must-Have Sentiments Glimmer Plate and a couple of glitter foam hearts from the Heartfelt Card Maker’s Kit.
Pretty Floral Hello Card
I love buffalo plaid, but it can be a very bold look and draw too much attention away from your focal point sometimes. Here I toned this blue plaid pattern down a bit by splitting the background with a matching tone-on-tone woodgrain pattern for this pretty floral hello card.
Trim a piece of blue buffalo check patterned paper from the Doodlebug Buffalo Check-Wood Grain Rainbow Petite Prints Pack down to 4.25” x 5.5” and adhere to a top-folding A2-sized white card base. Peony Just Because Card
Subtle patterns like those on the tone-on-tone wood grain patterned paper in the Doodlebug Buffalo Check-Wood Grain Rainbow Petite Prints Pack can add unexpected texture to a stamped image, so I thought it would be fun to try this technique out with my BetterPress. Here I applied black ink to pink wood grain paper using the Peony Background Press Plate for this pretty just-because card.
Ink up the Peony Background Press Plate with BetterPress Black Ink and press it onto a piece of light pink wood grain patterned paper. Glittered Rainbow Heart Card
Lastly, I love combining different patterned papers on a die-cut, either using a patchwork of different patterns or strips of different colors. Here I added an extra glitter touch to this idea for a bright and fun love card.

Thank you for the inspiration. I enjoy using my patterned papers and often wish for different ways to use it. I will definitely be trying some of these in my crafting.
These are great, helpful ideas. Can you show more examples? For example, small floral prints, stripes, masculine prints, wood patterns, polka dots, etc. Thanks.
