Hello crafters! Jen Kotas here to share a step-by-step photo tutorial using the 3D Felt Decor Spring Collection by Sandi MacIver. This collection works with and complements the Fergus 3D Felt Decor Collection released last year.
We’ll be creating a stitched egg that can be made in no time and as simple or detailed as you wish!
Step 1
Cut the large egg from 3D Eggs and Flowers Etched Dies four times and the large square once.
Step 2
Choose a floss color close to the color of the felt. Cut off about a yard then pull out three individual threads and thread the needle.
Step 3
Line up the holes of two egg die cuts and hold them together with a few small clips.
Step 4
Come up through the first hole of the top egg only. Leave enough of a tale to tie a knot when done.
Step 5
Stitch through both of the next set of holes and continue to top stitching through every second hole.
Step 6
Once you reach the top, stitch back down the same side, filling in the gaps, going through every second hole again.
Step 7
When you reach the last hole, only go through the first layer. Cut the thread, leaving a long tail.
Step 8
Tie a knot with the two threads and tuck the tails up inside.
Step 9
Repeat steps four through eight with the third and fourth egg pieces until you get to the top of the second side of the egg piece. Run the thread through the hole next to the hole you came up through, bring floss to the other side, then up and over back to the starting point. Finish the last section.
Step 10
Line up the square base with one side of the egg. Line up holes and stitch along the straight side.
Step 11
Continue to the second side, only stitching the straight sides.
Step 12
Leave two sides unstitched and stuff with fiber fill ½ to ¾ full. Add crushed walnut shells or other filling to weigh the base.
Step 13
Go through two side stitches, then begin the third side.
Step 14
Continue to stitch the third and fourth sides.
Step 15
Continue around a second time, filling in the gaps and closing the corners as in step 13.
Step 16
Die-cut pieces to create four daffodils.
Step 17
Stitch leaves going up, then back down. Knot the ends and cut the tails close.
Step 18
Use liquid glue generously to adhere felt pieces.
Step 19
Adhere both petal layers together.
Step 20
Add liquid glue to the yellow fringe piece along the bottom and sides, then roll it up and hold it closed for a few minutes.
Step 21
Add liquid glue to the bottom and sides of the solid yellow piece.
Step 22
Place the rolled piece on the solid one, then roll them together. Hold for a few minutes to set.
Step 23
Apply a generous amount of liquid glue to the flower center, and place the rolled piece.
Step 24
Tip: Use a liquid glue that dries matte so any glue on the finished piece won’t show.
Step 25
When adding liquid glue to stitched leaves, adjust and trim any ends so they aren’t peaking out under the leaf.
Step 26
Add a daffodil with liquid glue, allowing it to set before moving on to the next side.
