Behind the Scenes: Creating the 2017 Catalog Cover

Raun Edano designs many of the Hero Arts stamps and dies you love, but did you know he also created the beautiful cover of the 2017 Catalog?

We received many kind comments and a few questions about the cover, so we thought it would be fun to give you a behind-the-scenes look at its creation. Here’s Raun with more information and photos!

I used a huge 18 x 24 sheet of watercolor paper. I spread Bubble Gum, Tide Pool, and Pale Tomato inks on the watercolor paper. I then sprayed it with water to make all the ink smear around and then let that dry.

I cut out waves from another piece of watercolor paper to make the border.

The paper I used for the lily pads was the PS640 Pool Layering Paper (the middle shade.) I used the new DI337 Oval Infinity Dies to cut out the shape of the lily pads. I folded the ovals in half and cut the inner folded area to make a more lily pad shape. I also curled the out edge and made inner folds for more dimensional detail.

The paper I used for the water lily cutouts was the PS620 Blush Mix Layering Paper (the lightest shade.) I used the DI161 Paper Layering Large Lotus and cut the corners to cut the lilies out.

I die cut watercolor paper with the DI336 Paper Layering Koi Fish and used watercolors to color the fish.

The hummingbirds were additions from Libby, created with the new DI335 Paper Layering Hummingbird die.

I used the DI199 Circle Infinity Dies to to cut out circles and watercolored them and placed them around the piece. Lastly, I sprinkled around the CH300 Ombre Ocean sequins.

The oval, koi fish and hummingbird dies, as well as the sequins, will be available in the Hero Arts online shop next Tuesday. We’ll also be hosting a big blog hop that day, so mark your calendars!
