What’s better than anything? Getting to play with Hero Arts products and making things! Welcome to my new world of Saturdays with Sally. I am here to inspire you with all kinds of new ideas. I repurpose, I create and just plain have FUN with all my favorite Hero stamps, dies and supplies! I try to get the most out of products and often think outside the box - or outside the stamp and die lines. After all, “What’s old, is new again!”
I love to make small projects that I can work on in front of the TV or while on vacation. So I went through the Hero catalog to find some dies that would make great fabric flowers. We made them on the front of the 2011 cover and it's always been one of my favorite projects, so I thought it was time to stitch up some more!
That year we used large flower stamps. This time I wanted to use dies. BUT, there was a problem. There were no large flower dies that would work. SOOOOOOO, I tried using the Nesting Clouds Infinity Dies for the petals and the Ornaments Infinity Dies for the leaf. PERFECTION! Who knew a cloud die would make a great flower?!
So let’s make this already!
You can use any fabric scraps or felt. The die will cut one or two layers depending on the thickness of the material. For one flower, cut 2 large petals (wrong sides together) and 2 small petals. Then cut 2 leaves. Hand stitch them together with embroidery floss or pearl cotton. (You can also stitch them together with a sewing machine, but that isn’t easy when sitting on a sofa watching Netflix!) Before you make the last few stitches, cut up an old dryer sheet and put it in each petal for a little fullness. If you are using felt, it isn’t necessary.
For the centers, use decorative stitching or buttons, or other findings. Assemble the 2 petals and leaf and attach a pin backing with thread or fabric glue. After you have made one, you will think of all kinds of twists and variations. Don’t worry about any frayed edges… it’s the shabby chic look and my old pins still look great.

Sally, this was one of my favorites from back in the day! I still have this catalog and refer to it often for inspiration and just to make me feel happy! I enjoyed your article, You reminded me that if we get out some of our old products and apply some of the new techniques, we can really stretch our supplies!
