Play Your Cards Right!

Hello there, Michelle Short here and I am delighted to be back on the Spellbinders blog using the Jack of All Trades collection by Jaycee Gaspar. This is such a fun collection based on playing cards and can be used in lots of different ways!

ENJOY EVERY MOMENT

My first card uses the stunning Kaleidoscope Noble Suits Etched Dies. Each of the suits (heart, spade, diamond & club) all have three dies that you can layer up one on top of another to create a kaleidoscope look. I have used them that way for my card, but you can also just use one or two layers and still get a great look! To make this card:

• Die cut bottom layer of the club and heart from Kaleidoscope Noble Suits from Pink Sand Cardstock.
• Die cut the middle layer from Fruit Punch Cardstock.
• Die cut the top layer from Poppy Field Cardstock.
• Die cut bottom layer of the diamond and spade from Fog Cardstock.
• Die cut the middle layer from Graphite Cardstock.
• Die cut the top layer from Onyx Cardstock.

• Adhere layers of each suit together, one on top of another, using Bearly Art Glue.
• Adhere to A2-sized white card base using foam squares cut into small pieces.
• Hot foil sentiment from Shuffling Sentiments onto white cardstock using Champagne Foil: place foil onto cardstock shiny side up, place plate on top design side down, hold in place with Best Ever Craft Tape, place on the platform of Glimmer Hot Foil System (which has heated up), press timer button and once ready, place shims on top and run through Platinum Six.
• Cut sentiment into a strip and adhere to card using Bearly Art Glue.
• To finish, embellish with Red and Onyx Color Essentials Gems.

TOP TIP: When hot foiling press plates, I like to heat up my Glimmer machine twice, I find that I get a better foiled impression doing it that way. Experiment with your machine to see what works best for you!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, QUEEN

My next card uses the fabulous Reversible Royal Court Etched Dies.  The King, Queens and Jack are made so that you can have one at the top of a playing card and one reversed below. As you can see from my card, I went in a different direction. I love it when you can use dies in different ways! To make this card:

• Die cut Queen from cardstock – Alabaster for the skin, Latte for the hair, Timber for the eyes, Pink Sand for the lips, Purple Mist, Lilac Blossom, Royal Amethyst & Snowdrift for the clothing, Peridot, Pink Sand & Fruit Punch for the rose, and Gold Assortment Treasured Cardstock for the crown, necklace and buckle.
• Adhere pieces together using Bearly Art Glue.

• Create A2 A2-sized card base from black cardstock.
• Using Guillotine Paper Trimmer, cut the bottom edge of a panel of white cardstock at an angle to match the shape of the bottom of the Queen.
• Adhere white panel to card base.
• Adhere Queen on top using foam squares.
• Hot foil sentiment from Shuffling Sentiments onto white cardstock with Champagne Foil. Cut into strip and adhere to card with Bearly Art Glue and foam squares.
• To finish, add Gold Mix Color Essentials Gems to crown and necklace.

TWO OF A KIND

For my last project, I wanted to use the Pip & Rank Etched Dies for a simple love themed card. To make the card:

• Using Guillotine Paper Trimmer cut two pieces of white cardstock to 2” x 2 ¾”.
• Round corners using 1-2 Punch: Corner Rounder & Notch.
• Die cut heart (4 times) and numbers (2 times) from Pip & Rank using Poppy Field Cardstock.
• Die cut club (4 times) and numbers (once) from Onyx Cardstock.
• Adhere clubs and numbers to playing cards using Bearly Art Glue (I doubled up the clubs and hearts for added dimension).

• Adhere playing cards to A2 sized white card base using foam squares.
• Hot foil sentiment from Shuffling Sentiments onto white cardstock with Champagne Foil. Cut into strip and adhere to card with Bearly Art Glue (plus a foam square where it overlaps onto the card base).
• Embellish with Black Smooth Discs Color Essentials Sequins.

TOP TIP: The playing cards overlap the side of the card since I like that look. I would probably make a custom sized envelope for this card, but an even easier way to do would be to cut a little off the width of the card. That way it will still fit in a standard sized envelope!
