DIY With Debi: Cake in a Jar

Hi friends and welcome back to another DIY with Debi! As many of you know, Hero Arts has had some amazing opportunities and launches recently that supported inclusivity in both the art community and the world as a whole. All good stuff! With that said, it changed my posting days a little bit, (and so worth it), but I'm back with a lot of new ideas to share. Today’s project is perfect not only for birthdays but wedding showers, bridal showers, going away parties, work celebrations, etc. The list is endless and that doesn’t even include all the holidays! How about those essential workers? Anyway, I am going to show you how to make this festive cake in jar. It’s a quick little favor, ideal for a small, thoughtful gift for someone special.

I am going to start off with a few tips here. The next time you’re creating a card, try to stamp, die-cut, and color a couple of extra images and put them in a jar. When you are ready to make something like this, you will already have the parts and pieces you need and will save yourself some time. I don’t always do this but when I have, it made “I’m in a hurry” so much more enjoyable. :)

For this particular project I chose stamps from a few different sets to make it a birthday jar but you could substitute out any of them for a different occasion or find one set that does it all. Lucky for us, there are plenty to choose from at Hero. I highly recommend the Festive Balloon set though. The balloons make it so fun, there are lots of sentiments and they work for a variety of events.

To create the jar itself and for my second tip, I buy the mason jars by the dozen and have them washed and ready to go. I make my own cupcakes (but you can purchase them too) and freeze them in an airtight container for up to three months. When I am ready to use them, they are available. I pop them into the jars, layer some store-bought frosting on top, put the lid on and decorate them. (You probably could freeze these completed ones as well. Just make sure they are in freezer proof baggies or containers.)

I made a fun little party hat for the top (a simple cone shape) or you can buy a mini one from the party supply store and attach it to the top of the jar. If you want to embellish your own like mine, I used Reactive Inks and a blending tool to add color to the Dove White Cardstock hat. (Don’t want a party hat? Just cover the top with a pretty paper circle or some paper flowers.) To hide the side of the lid, I ran ribbon and pom pom trim around it and hot glued it in place. White-covered wire attached to the balloons gave them stability and all were glued together with a mini plastic gold spoon and attached to the hat. A goodie bag was created with mini sprinkles and a stamped, bag topper. (I trimmed mine with decorative scissors but you can use the Tag Frames Infinity Dies for your topper as seen in the supply picture above.) The rose image was attached to the topper and then glued to the hat. Ah, and don’t forget the big pom pom ball on the top of the hat.

Well that’s it for today! Hoping I gave you a few more ideas on ways to use your stamps and dies creatively. Thank you so much for popping in. Hope to see you back here soon!

XO,

Linda W. (ScrappinBari),

Just love your decorated jar, Debi – such a cute idea & I love the combo of images!!

Betty,

love your cake in a jar idea – how do you keep the frosting on the bottom cupcake from getting all smooshed into the bottom of the top one?

paperpicnic,

Debi, This is adorable! What a wonderful idea, Yum! Sure to bring huge smiles!!

Laura P,,

Hi Debi,
What an adorable favor! Thanks for sharing all of your great tips. Your cards are just beautiful, too. The shadow stamp from the vault gives such a nice background without distracting from the lovely flower.
