Dimensional Poinsettia DIY | Spellbinders Live

Join Kim Kesti in the Creative Classroom as she creates a beautiful realistic poinsettia from  Susan’s Holiday Flora Collection , from Spellbinders’ licensed designer Susan Tierney-Cockburn. Watch video below or on our Youtube channel : Poinsettia are the quintessential holiday flower, aren’t they?  Susan’s Poinsettia die set is fairly simple and it’s a great floral die set to begin with. One of the best features of these five simple dies are the unique markings to show you how many times to cut each die (2x, 1x, etc.). You’ll see on the large die, it says 2X, which reminds you to cut this die two times to create the red leaves, (then cut one or two times for the green portion of the leaves.) You can cut these dies from red and green cardstock for a quick and simple card, or cut them from a neutral color and add your own color with markers or paint.  Susan’s Garden Specialty Cardstock  is ideal for adding color with inks, and alcohol markers. The beautiful stippled texture is perfect for shaping and molding realistic flowers.

Kim die cut her leaves from the specialty cardstock and then uses Copic R36 to color red leaves and YG99 plus a little BG96 for the green leaves. (Remember to color the leaves on both sides.) Susan’s Garden Ultimate Tool Kit includes tweezers and a specialty Tool-in-One, plus a foam pad and leaf pad that you will love for adding texture and dimension to these amazing floral dies. Kim uses the curved tip and leaf pad to draw a crease line down the center of each leaf. Then she draws veins from the center line out. These score lines will help you to shape the leaves and add dimension. Next, Kim uses PanPastels to add a little green to the center of the red leaves, and then adds some green highlighting to the green colored leaves.

Fun fact - Did you know the very center of the poinsettia is the actual flower part of the plant?

To create the center of the poinsettia, Kim colored it with a green marker. Next, she added something that’s available soon in the Spellbinders shop, Nuvo Drops. Nuvo Drops add shiny three-dimensional effects to paper crafted projects, and they come in a variety of colors. Kim used Olive Branch to add dimensional drops to the end of each piece. (Susan recommends adding them to both sides of the die cut shapes.) Watch today’s video to see how Kim uses the Medium Ball Tip and tweezers to assemble the center of the poinsettia. To assemble the entire flower, glue each layer together, staggering the placement so the layered leaves peek through behind each other. While Kim’s beautiful poinsettia dries, she creates the base of today’s card. She starts with the  6x6 Christmas Traditions Paper Pad  choosing one of the elegant foil prints from the pack.
