Mixing Colors and Patterns on Cards

Hi there crafty friends! I’m Rebecca Keppel and today I have a step-by-step tutorial for mixing and matching colors and patterns on cards using the Rosie’s Studio Hello It’s Me! collection. This pretty collection has a variety of available supplies that are great for cardmaking including a 6x6 patterned paper pad and an embellishment kit packed with everything from die cuts to chipboard stickers and more. My first step when thinking about mixing patterns and colors is to pull out 6x6 patterned papers that catch my eye. I try to grab a mix of light and dark colors to create contrast as well as small and larger patterns. I’ll search the Cardstock Diecut Ephemera – Sentiments to find a few sentiments that match some of the colors of patterned paper. It’s easy to coordinate these items when you are working within one collection where everything is created to work together! Next, I like to use the Spellbinders Guillotine trimmer to cut the patterns I’ve chosen down to an A2 (4.25”x5.5”) because that is the card size I am going to make. Then cut the patterned paper into various sizes with the largest being the A2 base. For this, I like to use the concept of gallon, quart, pint. It’s not an exact science, but the basic idea is to use a large amount of one color (or pattern) a medium amount of another and a small amount of a third. This way your card doesn’t get too distracting with lots of colors and patterns. It’s easy to adhere these papers together with the Spellbinders Tape Runner. Tip: adhere a thin strip of striped paper to mimic the look of trim on the edge of one of your chosen patterns. Use Spellbinders Foam Squares to add dimension behind the die cuts. This is such a simple way to add interest to a card! Next, I look through each of the other embellishments included in the Embellishment Bundle starting with the Chipboard Stickers and add them here and there. I like to layer them like the chipboard heart on the hello beautiful die cut. If you look closely, you’ll see I even layered a chipboard heart on top of another chipboard sticker! I also love adding foam stickers again layering them on die cuts or several at the edge of patterned paper. I couldn’t resist adding a clear sticker from the Hello It's Me! Sticker Book. It is the bow I added the stems of the daisies on the tag. I also added a gold heart from the Cardstock Diecut Ephemera. Another easy design technique I use often is the visual triangle. If you draw a line from the gold heart to the gold Puffy Stickers to the metallic top of the tag you can see the triangle. It helps draw the eye around the card.
