Utilizing Leftover Foil with Essential Glimmer Solid Shapes & Annie Williams

Hello again this is Annie Williams and I’m excited to be back on the blog today to share a couple of projects using the new Essential Glimmer Solid Shapes Collection from Spellbinders. The bold designs in this collection can be used with so many interesting techniques and I was inspired to create three springtime cards for a variety of occasions.

Leftover Leaf Design

One of my favorite ways to use these designs is also the simplest. By taking the leftover foil from a background design, I can create an equally beautiful “negative” of that background for another card. Here I added a few spring blooms to a golden leaf background for a pretty foiled thank you card.

• Die-cut Fern Cardstock using the Large Square Outer Rim and Insert dies from the Fluted Classics Square Die Set.
• Apply Gold Hot Foil to any cardstock using the Background Pattern from the Lovely Ladybug Glimmer Plate Set. Apply the leftover foil pattern to the center of the die-cut Fern panel using the Essential Glimmer Solid Square Foil Plate.
• Mat the panel with Mirror Gold Cardstock and adhere to a top-folding white card base measuring 4.75” square with tape runner.
• Apply Gold Hot Foil to any cardstock using the Be Bold Glimmer Sentiments Plate Set. Then apply the leftover foil to white cardstock using any of the Essential Glimmer Solid Shape Foil Plates (I used the rectangle so that I could foil all of the sentiments at the same time).
• Cut the sentiment out with the coordinating die to yield a beautiful gold rimmed sentiment.
• Die-cut Beeswax, Pink Sand, Mirror Gold, and Rainforest Cardstock using the flower and leaf dies from the Be Bold Blooms Die Set and the Mini Blooms & Sprigs Die Set.
• Die-cut white cardstock using the Medium Square Outer Rim and Insert and Small Square Outer Rim dies from the Fluted Classics Squares Die Set to form a frame. Adhere it in the center of the card front with foam adhesive.
• Arrange the sentiment, flowers, and leaves around the frame and adhere down with more foam adhesive.
• Embellish with Gold Mix Gems.

Other Supplies

Heavyweight white cardstock, tape runner, foam adhesive.

Negative Foiled Sentiment

Next, I thought it would be fun to create a bold focal point out of the negative of a foiled sentiment.  If you use colored cardstock for this, you can match the color of your sentiment to your background!

• Apply Matte Gold Hot Foil to any cardstock using the Thank You & Happy Birthday Glimmer Plate Set. Then apply the leftover foil to Wild Berry Cardstock using the Essential Glimmer Solid Circle Shape Glimmer Plate.
• Cut the sentiment out using the Essential Circles Die Set.
• Apply Matte Gold Hot Foil to white cardstock using one of the sentiments from the Mini Everyday Sentiments Plate Set and cut it out using the coordinating die.
• Die-cut Wild Berry Cardstock using the largest die from the Precision Layering Mini Slimline A Die Set and apply Matte Gold Hot Foil to the entire panel using the Slimline Confetti Background Plate Set (you will have to foil twice).
• Mat the foiled panel with Mirror Gold Cardstock and adhere it to a side-folding white card base measuring 3.5” x 6.5”.
• Die-cut Pink Sand, Mirror Gold, and Fern Cardstock using the Be Bold Blooms Die Set and assemble with liquid glue.
• Mount the sentiment circle and strip onto the card front with foam adhesive as shown.
• Embellish with the flowers and leaves.

White heavyweight cardstock, tape runner, foam adhesive.

Positive + Negative

Since I was creating with negatives of foiled designs, I also thought it would be fun to try to use the opposite patterns together. Here I used one of my favorite foil plates to create a pretty background for this easy hello card.

• Trim a piece of white cardstock to 4” x 5.25” and apply Moondust Hot Foil it using the Sweet Blooms Border Plate.
• Apply the leftover foil to another piece of white cardstock using the Essential Glimmer Solid Oval Shape Plate and cut it out using the Essential Ovals Die Set.
• Apply Gold Hot Foil to any cardstock using the Be Bold Glimmer Sentiments Plate Set. Then apply the leftover foil to white cardstock using the Essential Glimmer Rectangle Solid Shape Plate.  Cut the sentiment out with the coordinating die.
• Apply Gold Hot Foil to white cardstock using the Glimmer Edge Butterflies Plate Set. Blend Wilted Violet and Kitsch Flamingo Distress Ink over the foiled design with a sponge dauber and cut it out using the coordinating die.
• Die-cut Mirror Gold Cardstock with the small body die from the Glimmer Edge Butterflies Set and assemble with liquid glue.
• Adhere the background panel to a top-folding A2-sized white card base with foam adhesive.
• Add the foiled oval to the center of the card with more foam adhesive.
• Pop the butterfly and sentiment up in the corners of the card.
• Embellish with Aquamarine AB Gems.
